Cosmic Classroom!
As part of the Cosmic Classroom competition the children at Mossley were asked to submit videos with their questions that they wanted to ask Tim Peake.
Thousands and thousands of schools entered many different videos and we just wanted you to see our entries.

Year 2's Safer Internet Day, by Mrs Swift

Safer Internet Day in Year 2
As part of our Safer Internet Day learning Year 2 thought carefully about the promises that they wanted to make to ensure that they remained positive and safe online. We all wrote our promises on a heart and then formed ourselves into a heart shape on the playground.
We also considered how we use the internet in Year 2 and how in the future we promise to only make positive comments. We wrote positive comments on post-it-notes and stuck them all to different children.
As part of the day we also made Internet Safety posters and we have laminated them and stuck them up in our classroom.
What a great way to raise awareness.

Today the children have learnt all about internet safety, lessons have been based around the safety on line with samples of how out of control things can get if they are not careful.

Chinese New Year and Shrove Tuesday, by Miss Holland

We have had a wonderful week of celebrations with Chinese New Year and Shove Tuesday or Pancake Day as it is more commonly known.
For Chinese New Year we learnt all about the customs and traditions behind the festival and the story of the 12 animals crossing the river that became the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac. We made our own dancing Dragons, masks, money envelopes and even created our own Dragon Dance to music. We tasted noodles with soy sauce and prawn crackers and had great fun using chopsticks. We also learnt the game of 'Chinese whispers' and made cards to our family "Kung Hei Fat Choy"
Pancake Day was another celebration as we learnt all about the Christian festival of Shrove Tuesday the day before Lent. We learnt about the reasons behind having Pancakes on this day and why Shrove Tuesday always occurs before Lent. We also watched how other countries celebrate this day and had fun watching pancake racing on youtube. Our favourite part of the day was our own pancake races and of course having our very own pancakes made in font of us and eating them!!! We wrote a list of ingredients for our favourite pancake and then imagined what we could give up for Lent.

A huge thank you to Mrs Speak and the kitchen staff for organising a special picnic lunch in the hall to coincide with our 'Bear' project. We all had a wonderful time and an even more wonderful lunch, it was Bearrrrrrrilliant!
Year 5/6 Cheshire Football Champions, by Mrs Grice

County Champions
On Thursday 28th January, Mossley Primary School entered an u11 boys team into the Jeff Smith Cup (also known as the Cheshire School Finals). The boys had earned a place at the finals after winning the local Datastor Cup against all the other primary schools in Congleton.
The competition took place at Crewe Soccer Centre and the teams that attended were from all over Cheshire – from Chester to Warrington. Although Mossley had never competed against any of the other schools present, they were soon well aware of the talent they were up against. Mossley were entered into group ‘A’, along with: Stockton Heath, Warrington; Kingsley, Elsmere Port and St Mary’s, Crewe.
The first group game saw Mossley come out 3 -1 winners after an early scare, after going one-nil down against St Mary’s. Next, they played a very resolute Kingsley side in which Mossley won 1 – 0 after hitting the woodwork on three separate occasions. In the final group game, Mossley came out as 4 – 1 winners against Stockton Heath, again, after conceding the first goal.
As a result of winning all three group games, Mossley proceeded to the knockout stages. The quarter finals saw the boys come up against Westbrook Old Hall, Warrington. By this point, the team had really hit their stride and were comfortable 3 – 0 winners.
The semi – final was a much more closely contested game which saw Mossley come up against a very determined Stockton Heath team, whom were out for revenge after their 1 – 4 defeat in the group stages. After the final whistle, the score was still tied at 0 – 0 which meant that extra time was needed. After a further five minutes of football, the score was still level. The penalty shootout caused a little controversy as – after half of the kicks – Mossley were wrongly awarded the win when there were still more penalties to take which gave Stockton a chance to bring it back. After much confusion, The penalties were resumed for Mossley to step up and score the deciding penalty which saw them go through to the final.
Three minutes into the final, Mossley once again went 1 – 0 down and although they raised their game and dominated the play, they still got to the half time interval, trailing the game against a very well organised King’s Chester team. However, what followed can only be described as ‘magical football’. For boys aged 9-11, what they produced on the pitch was breath-taking. Their determination, persistence and team work meant that they recovered from the deficit to cruise to a well-deserved 3 – 1 win.
Mossley Primary School are extremely proud of the boys who took part in the competition and look forward to seeing how well they do in the North of England finals which are due to take place in Doncaster during the month of March. Ben Heades (team manager) said, “The boys did themselves proud and their attitude and approach to the tournament was a credit to the school. I’m very excited to see what the boys can do against the best teams from the north of England.”

Following on from the whole town Inset in October last year around growth mindset Mossley School welcomed an under 24 GB athlete, Jack Schofield, into school this week. An ex Eaton Bank student Jack talked to the children about the challenges he has faced to maintain his fitness whilst studying for an architecture degree at Bath University. Jack spoke to the children about reaching “The pit” and how the journey he had undertaken to get out had needed a growth mindset. Jack will be representing GB in Austria this summer in the European Championships competing in a middle distance triathlon. Jack is also waiting to hear if he has qualified for the long distance team to race world championships in Oklahoma in September along with the European Championships in Poznan at the end of July. Jack is currently looking for additional sponsorship to enable him to fund races and the possibility of a time trial bike. Head Boy and Girl (and their deputies) attend the Internet Safety Conference, by Mr Johnson

On Thursday 29th January, four children were chosed to attend the Barney and Echo Internet Safety Roadshow at Crewe Alexandra Football Club.
On arrival, the children were given the chance to speak to people showing various products that were available to schools. These included Brainpop, Just2Easy and Chatfoss.
The day begin with a talk from PC Liz Stanton who talked about what the age rating on games mean and the meaning of other safety symbols. She then went into further details about the best way to play age-appropriate games safely online so that the children could remain safe. She then gave the children some details on Youtube kids (which blocks out any inapropriate content), on how Childline are there if children see things online that make them feel uncomfortable. In addition, she showed the children the Share Aware site and the NSPCC site (set up by mumsnet). Consequently, PC Liz Stanton went on to talk about the effects of gaming.
That it can:
be addictive,
lead to people copying behaviours of the game,
cause stress,
cause anger and confusion,
show people inappropriate content,
cause hand and wrist cramps,
give you sore eyes and neck,
stop people talking face to face,
cause loneliness.
Later on in the day, a fomer police officer told the children that most passwords can be hacked into within three days and the best way to prevent this is to choose four totally unrelated words and to write them as one word. It will take 550 years to hack into. He then went on to tell the children about food printers, pills that can be taken that will mean that passwords will not be necessary and lots of other future technology.
The children will then be sharing this information in a special assembly on Safer Internet Day.

This week we held our new Head Boy & Head Girl elections and our current ones stepped down.
We are pleased to announce Max Woodcock as New Head Boy and Rebecca Sayer as the New Head Girl.
We also elected new deputies,
Deputy Head Boy is Joshua Evett and Deputy Head Girl is Charlotte Shaw.
Thank you to our previous leaders and duputies for all their hard work over the last term and good luck to newly elected pupils.
Prickly Hay Mossley's Key Stage 1 Christmas Hoedown!, by Mrs Swift

PRICKLY HAY
In December the children in Key Stage 1 at Mossley Primary School performed their Christmas production 'Prickly Hay'. It was a nativity musical with a fun hoedown flavour. The story of hardworking Sam the stable boy and his faithful friend a jolly, singing Shrew who meet some very special visitors in their stable. With a host of line dancers, beautiful angels, Shepherds and Wise Men dancing and a crowd of donkeys, horses and cows this production has been a super success. The children, family, friends and staff have thoroughly enjoyed 'Prickly Hay' and we are sure that they will be singing the songs for many weeks to come. Mrs Swift (Assistant Head) said "the children have been a privilege to work with and their enthusiasm and talent is simply amazing".
A big thank you to all the parents for the their support throughout and also to the wonderful staff.

Hooray Hooray it's the Dark Ages Day!!
Everyone came into school dressed for the Dark Ages, ready for a fierce battle!
The children began their victorious Viking day by playing a game of strategy which involved rival tribes battling against each other to dominate Britain.
One of the key questions the children discussed was how Britain was developed through a collection of different groups of people. We then made this relevant to their identity in society, realising how we all have different hair colour, skin colour and other visible differences, understanding that it is still the same today!
In groups, we explored different factors that influenced settlements and mind mapped what we would need in choosing a desirable location.
Using maps of the UK, we researched different towns and cities that include Saxon names, some were local including Astbury (bury means fortified land) and Macclesfield (field means a field).
We then created our own Saxon settlement on a map and named them after the Saxons.
After break, we moved onto learning about the Vikings, discovering how gruesome they really were! We learnt how they travelled to Britain on longships, which had flat bottoms so that they could venture through rivers easily.
Before lunch, the children were shown some pictures of objects from Sutton Hoo. They were then asked to describe one object to their partner and they had to draw it (wthout looking).
After our Dark Age lunch, we rushed out to the field where we built a roaring fire, and furthermore began designing and building our own Anglo Saxon hut out of materials we rummaged to find in the forest.
Finally, we learnt some listening and note taking skills by carefully selecting key information about the Dark Ages which was being read out to us.
If you would like to take part in more hands-on archaeological fun, then Mr Machin is running a holiday school on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of December. You can come for just one day, or all three!

Cirque du Mossley, by Mrs Swift

Cirque du Mossley...........came to town!
Over the last 2 weeks the children in Year 2 have been busy performing in their Cirque du Mossley show. As part of their autumn topic the children learnt a variety of circus acts and magic tricks. They have written poetry, instructions for how to paint a clown face and made 3D shapes from nets in order to store the popcorn. They have created their own posters to advertise their circus and made invites to parents.
Firstly the children performed in front of many parents, grandparents and siblings and because of the success of this they decided they wanted to carry the show on and perform in front of 350 children throughout the school!
We had 'hair-raising' hoola hoopers, jugglers, magicians, singing and many other amazing sights to watch. One of the acts was Jack White reading out his instructions for 'how to paint a clown face' and for this Poppy Wimore's Mummy bravely volunteered to have her face painted by Chiara Potts.
When the children performed it in front of the school Mrs Hodgkinson was the 'unlucky' one to have a clown face painted. The children were treated to a juggling competition between Mr Heades, Mrs Hodgkinson and Mr Johnson and the winner was............ Mr Heades.
We have recieved really kind emails about the event letting us know how much parents and children have enjoyed their learning within this topic. Thank you so much for your continued support throughout. Also a big thank you to everyone that helped to get this show on the road.
Lastly a huge THANK YOU to the children of Year 2 for their enthusiasm, courage and fun!

Today, some of the Year 3 children were able to 'be the teacher.' They used their knowledge of the partitioning method to plan and teach a short session to explain to a group of Year 2 children how to partition numbers correctly to add. They had lots of fun and thought about how they needed to explain the method to the children in a clear and easily understandable way. They set up the session and did a super job of being the teacher and showing the Year 2's how to partition. They all had lots of fun! A big well done to the Year 2 and 3 children that were involved. You were all super!

Today we started our reading buddy scheme where the children have the chance to read to or be read to by other children. We have been lucky enough that today half of Mr Gregory's class have come to our class to either hear us read or read to us in a small group. We had lots of fun and are already looking forwards to next week! If a Year 6 child has heard a Year 3 child read, they will write this in their planner. Take a look at our pictures!

On Tuesday 3rd November Year 4 received a letter from Buckingham Palace thanking them for their lovely messages,photographs and questions for Her Majesty.
On the 9th September we celebrated the Queen being the longest reigning British Monarch.
In the morning we compared Queen Elizabeth II to Queen Victoria, we each made a union jack flag to wave at our lunchtime 'street' party.
During the afternoon we made bunting with pictures of the Queens favourite things and some of us wrote letters to the Queen, congratulating her and asking her some questions.
Year 3 D&T Bugtopia Day, by Miss Young

On Thursday Year 3 had a BUGTASTIC day!
The children started by finishing their designs for their bug houses and thinking about the different materials they would need to build their bug houses. We then went on a hunt outside to find any extra materials that we might need such as mud, leaves and twigs.
After we had gathered all the materials we needed, the building began! There was lots of creativity and also LOTS of mess...but most of all happy children.
The children all built a SUPER bug house and when they were finished, they placed them in the school grounds to make 'Critter Close' where we are hoping to find lots of bugs enjoying their holidays!
