Geography and History at Mossley Primary School
History and Geography Newsflash
We have been awarded the Silver Quality Mark for both History and Geography!!!
This represents the high quality History and Geography that is being taught and learnt at our school. The reports are a delight to read and we are so proud of what the children and staff have achieved.
A huge congratulations to Miss Devereux, Mrs Swift and Mossley School.
At Mossley CE Primary School, we aim for our curriculum to lead children's interests out into the world and for this to be effective the Humanities are important areas of study. Each has its specific knowledge and skills. While factual recall alone is insufficient to develop knowledge and understanding, some factual learning, including specific vocabulary are needed to achieve in these subjects.
In Key Stage 1 and 2 the children experience a range of topics where History and Geography are taught alongside each other. Some units of work may have a greater History focus or others may be more Geography focused (please see the Curriculum Plan). This year the children will be doing units of work such as Fragile Earth in Year 6, Extreme Earth in Year 5 and we are also doing a whole school unit based on World War 2 in order to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of VE day.
In EYFS Humanities are included in Understanding the World, helping children to understand the physical world, their community and cultural world.
The children in our school are very proud of their topic books and they feature all of their learning in History and Geography.
Our Humanities curriculum is enriched through visits to places such as:
Stafford Castle, Congleton Museum (whole school), Norton Priory, Biddulph Grange, Chester Zoo, Trentham Monkey Forest, York Residential.
We also welcome visitors into school such as Act it Out, Zoo2U, Roman Soldiers and Letters from War to bring our curriculum alive for the children.
Please take a look at our Humanities policy at the bottom of this page that details how we plan, deliver and asess these two very important subjects. We have also added the History and Geography progression grids that we use for assessment purposes.
